Fractions of amounts
Finding a fraction of an amount means working out what a fraction of a whole number is. "Find 3/4 of 20" — that kind of question.
What this looks like in the game
A fish swims across and you tap it. The question appears: something like "Find 2/5 of 30." You drag number tiles to build your answer and submit it.
The answer is always a whole number or a simplified fraction at this stage — the game will not ask you for a decimal.
How to find a fraction of an amount
Divide the amount by the bottom number.
Times the result by the top number.
That is all there is to it.
Worked example 1 — simple case
Divide by the bottom number
20 ÷ 4 = 5
Times by the top number
5 × 3 = 15
3/4 of 20 = 15
Worked example 2 — harder case
42 ÷ 6 = 7
7 × 5 = 35
5/6 of 42 = 35
The most common mistake
Watch out for
Doing the steps in the wrong order — timing by the top number first, then dividing.
Wrong order
Find 2/3 of 7 → times by 2 first → 14 ÷ 3 → messy decimal.
Right order
Divide first: 7 ÷ 3 = 7/3 · then × 2 = 14/3. Clean fraction answer.
Always divide by the bottom number first. It keeps the numbers clean.
